RSS Update

Google Reader and RSS seem like they have the potential to really help out all of these social media websites. I have google chrome so I had to install the extension but that wasn't a big deal. The only problem is that it doesn't seem too user friendly. The layouts not bad and the side bars with updates are nice but finding people seems to be a challenge. I couldn't find classmates or anyone for that matter because all it did was say "loading" and never actually ended up loading. I added a few subscriptions to different golf links and am getting updates daily which is pretty neat. All of my social media websites on are the sidebar which makes it much easier than checking them all individually. Plus, I have an icon top right of my web pages that tells me how many unread articles or post I have which is nice too. I'm pretty sure I changed my settings to allow everyone to view or find my page but I'm not exactly sure because I still have zero friends. As for my organization, I couldn't find a homepage but I was able to locate a few blogs about them. This could be helpful, but a homepage from the actual organization would be more efficient for research. Overall, I like the idea of an RSS and think that if I can get used to it that it will be helpful. But as for now, in the beginners stage, it's challenging and honestly a little frustrating.

Blogging, Facebook, and Twitter

Over the past few days I've been learning how to use all 3, blogging, facebook, and twitter. Overall, I have to say I like facebook the best. This may be a tad biased though because it's the only one that's not completely new to me. But what I like about facebook is how easy it is to set up your page, friends, and even find other friends. I've found it more difficult to do this with blogging, twitter, and even the wikispace I'm working on. With facebook you search for people's actually names instead of domain names like with some other social medias. Also, tweeting and blogging seem to be just about the same thing to me. They seem to be used more frequently than facebook. I noticed people may blog or tweet several times a day. But with facebook, it seems more limited. Not too many people have multiple statuses a day like with twitter. As for my organization, International Pharmaceutical Federation, I was able to find a page on facebook but not on twitter. Not exactly sure why they don't have a twitter account, maybe twitter isn't too popular in the Netherlands lol (where they're founded and based out of). But I am starting to realize that these types of online social medias can play a big part of our futures, even dealing with jobs we may apply for. But if you do get worried your facebook page could potentially ruin your career if viewed by your boss, all you have to do is change the settings so it's private and only your friends can view your page and comments. It may seem  somewhat unrealistic, but the way our society is developing technologically, it's not completely out of the question.

International Pharmaceutical Federation

New Wiki

Cory and I just created our wiki on wikispaces for the group project assignment. I did some research on International Pharmaceutical Foundation (FIP) and posted a discussion post about the organization. Basically it is a pharmacy organization based in the Netherlands that supports the pharmaceutical industry worldwide. I'm glad I was given this organization because it relates to my major and maybe I'll even learn a thing or two about pharmacy that I didn't know. I found the website fairly easy to use. I haven't really messed around with changing up the format or design of the pages yet but look forward to it when we start using the wiki's more. What's everyone's thoughts on wiki's? Like them, dislike them? Believe them? Are they trustworthy? Compare them to blogs; which is better, more helpful, more informative, more trustworthy? Should anyone be able to change information on wikis? should there be restrictions? Will blogs or wiki's be helpful with anyone's career? Will they make things more time efficient or more time consuming?

Thoughts on Social Applications of the Web 2.0

First of all, I'd like to say I like the idea of having this class online. It may be hard not being able to ask the teacher questions face to face but hopefully we can get used to it. I had a little trouble at first setting up my blog. I had to create an account for google and then had to figure out how to set up my profile. I decided to set my privacy settings to let anyone view my blogs. My reason being that I personally don't care who views what I have to say. I hope this class teaches me more than I know about the web and I expect to become more knowledgeable with blogging when the class is finished. I don't really think blogs will be used efficiently in anything that has to do with pharmacy, but I'd like to be proven wrong.
